SCHOLARSHIPS
Our chorus supports the arts throughout our community with support to the music departments of North Kingstown Schools as well as annual scholarships offered to high school seniors headed to college to study music.
The North Kingstown Community Chorus is pleased to announce the 2024 winners of two music scholarships to two high school seniors who will continue their music studies at the college level, Ella Stolaroff & Dewni Weerakkody.
Ellis Stolaroff, a senior at North Kingstown High School, is an outstanding student and talented pianist, cellist, and vocalist. She auditioned and was accepted into the high school’s Music Career and Technical and Education (CTE) Program. She started taking piano lessons when she was 5 years old. Her piano skills have helped her tremendously in the process of arranging music. Ellis also started playing the cello in the 4 th grade. Through the Rhode Island Education Association (RIMEA) she auditioned and performed in junior and senior Allstate Orchestra, as well as earning superior awards several years in a row. Also, she has been invited to be part of
an honors quartet through “Musica Dolce.” In addition, she has sung in her school’s Select Concert Choir for 3 years. Ellis pushes herself to take challenging classes that continue to see her grow as a performer, arranger, and leader, which include Music Studio Lab where she learns the basics of creating music electronically, and AP Music Theory. This March, she performed in the Pit Orchestra for the spring musical “Kiss Me Kate” where she got a valuable education performing alongside professional musicians. For her senior project, she learned how to arrange music for her trio, a piece which will be performed in the upcoming choir/orchestra trip to Ireland. Ellis plans on attending the New School’s Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts majoring in the “Contemporary Music” program. She hopes to take her experiences in the classroom to explore a career in the music industry, such as performing, music technology, and composition. Congratulations, Ellis! |
Dewni Weerakkody, a senior at South Kingstown High School, is a talented singer and performer. One of our judges remarked that she has “natural vocal talent” and that she has “all the makings of an excellent musical performer.” Not only is she in her high school’s choir, but for the last two years she has been in the select advanced choir, called eSKape. She has been involved with the RIMEA All State Choral Festival and Music In The Parks, helping her choir earn a 1 st Place award. She has been taking voice lessons for about a year and has participated in the Wakefield Idol Competition, earning 4 th place this year. In addition to her singing, Dewni also has a great deal of experience on the stage, in both musicals and non-musicals. She has been in her school musical in each of the last three years, this year garnering a lead role in “9 to 5”, for which she received the Ocean State Star Award Nomination for Outstanding Lead Performer in a musical. Last year she won the Ocean State Star Award for Outstanding Supporting Role in “Legally Blonde”. Dewni plans on attending Rhode Island College in the fall, and pursue a double major in Musical Theater and Dance. She has set high goals of acting professionally after graduation and one day making it to Broadway. Her Choral and Theater teacher writes that Dewni has “demonstrated an exceptional level of commitment, creativity, and talent in both her theatrical and musical pursuits.” Congratulations, Dewni!
